Zagreb’s program of the International Animation Day, in the production of ASIFA Croatia, consisted of two-days of discussions, projections and award ceremonies. Edo Lukman won a Life Achievement Award in the field of the animation. Congratulations!
Traditionally, Cultural Centre Čakovec and ŠAF celebrated the International Animation Day in their own way. Happy Saturday, 27th October, was reserved for the animated film workshop for children, led by Jasminka Bijelić Ljubić and Matea Barić, and the program continued with the animated film projections. There were eleven participants at the workshop. This time, the participants heard something about the history of ŠAF, a little bit on the theory of animation, and then they produced a nice cut-out movie made under the camera, “From us to you”. In the main cinema, there was a projection of awarded ŠAF movie called “Time flies / Vrijeme leti” and a movie “Luis and the aliens”.
Program was supported by the Croatian audio-visual centre.
This year too, ŠAF participated in the Croatian Children’s Film Festival. Every year the festival is held in a different city, and this, the 56th festival, took place in Bol on the island of Brač, in the movie theatre Mediteran. We participated with a total of 5 films in the categories workshop and animated films. The films were judged by an international jury of children, consisting of children from Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, and an expert jury featuring pedagogue, …
What has become a traditional cooperation with the Cultural Center Travno (KUC Travno, Zagreb) resulted this year in two retrospective projections. On 22 August at 20:00, a retrospective projection of the new ŠAF production took place on the plateau in front of the KUC Travno. The large audience, especially children, had the opportunity to watch 12 movies of ŠAF’s creation in various animation techniques. In addition to this screening, the first screening of ŠAF’s puppet films was announced. Namely, on 19 September at 20:00 in front of the KUC, there will also be an open-air projection which will present only puppet films created in the last 40 years. These films are interesting to the organizers because KUC Travno is also the organizer of the great International Puppet Theatre Festival – PIF, and the puppet as a media is very interesting and relates to them. Fans of animation and puppets – join us in this special projection!
On Saturday, 30 June, in the Cultural Centre Čakovec, during the International Animated Film Workshop, there was a screening of the ŠAF’s 77 children members. In a full cinema, public saw the movies from the ŠAF’s beginners, two projections of shorter and longer movies (up to one minute). Besides this, public was also shown the production of younger authors, and the production of older animator’s movies that will represent us at the festivals. Complete projection was over 30 minutes long, without the workshop movies which ŠAF produced in the schools and festivals (plus 15 minutes of animation). The screening was also the end of this school year’s production. New and old members can apply for the new school year in September.
Film by a ŠAF author Jurica Balenta, “White noise” was awarded 2nd prize in the category MAXI at the 9th International Children and Youth Animation Film Festival VAFI in Varaždin. This experimental animated movie was made completely in the computer as 2D animation on phonogram. Besides awarded “White noise”, other movies from the 2017 production were also selected. Few authors and the ŠAF leaders attended the festival too.
This year’s International Film Festival for Kids, KIKI from Zabok, Croatia, hosted ŠAF’s participants too. Jasminka Bijelić Ljubić, ŠAF leader, held a two-day workshop in the local children creativity club “Društvo naša djeca”. Amazing elementary schoolers, 16 of them, made beautiful stop-motion animations in the combined techniques based on buttons, fabric and wool on the 21st and 22nd of April. The theme was “Children’s rights”, familiar to workshop participants who almost all attended educations on the subject before. The movie is 3.5 minutes long with original music made in “Društvo naša djeca”. It will be screened at the closing ceremony of the festival on Friday and presented by the producer of the workshop, Mrs. Jasenka Borovčak.
On Wednesday, 25 April, at 17:30 ŠAF will also have a big retrospective in the Green room. This wonderful initiative was an idea of Mr. Nenad Borovčak, the director of KIKI. We hope that the other festivals for children will follow this idea and host our movies, awarded and recognised in the field of children film creativity.
There is an intensive work on SAF at the project “Saharawi”. It’s an animated movie made by ŠAF students, based on the drawings of everyday life of the children in the refugee camp in Western Sahara. It was an initiative of SAF member Dunja Franjić who made connections with the Saharawi refugee teacher. The goal was to make a movie out of the drawings and make everyday of those children more beautiful. And of course to show the film on different festivals to rise awareness of the problems Saharawi people have. …
