The 15. International animated film workshop was organized from June 15th to 22nd, with participation of 18 students from several places in Croatia and Totszerdahely in Hungary.
The workshop leaders were Sarah Klein from USA and Ekaterina Mikhaylova from Russia, who explained their experiences and personal stiles in animation to young participants and help them to realize two short animated films.
The group of kids who worked with Sarah Klein created 3 minutes long film (GOOD NIGHT, LET THE BUGS BITE) in cut out technique. Although most of the children worked in this technique for the first time, they succeeded to realize very nice and interesting film.
Another group (with Ekaterina Mikhaylova) did a puppet animation (WALK), in which they used two professional made puppets from one Ekaterina’s film, but also created own character and set designs.
Both films were shown at the last day of the workshop, together with selected films of Sarah and Ekaterina, and the films from SAF studio.
All participants had opportunity to spend one day at the picnic at river Mura and swimming in St. Martin spa.
Sarah Klein (USA) was born in New York City and has exhibited her work widely in galleries and museums, on television, and in film festivals. In 1999, she earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Mills College in Oakland, California, and since then has incorporated her creative work with teaching workshops to people of all ages. Sarah’s hand-drawn stop-motion animations “Clean Sweep” (2007), “Party Girl” (2006), and “Dirty Work” (2005) explore the conduct and codes of domestic life.
“Dirty Work” has screened extensively and is currently included in the Mobile Archive world tour traveling throughout Israel, Poland, Croatia and Slovenia.
Sarah collaborated with the musical duo Orange Sherbet to create the animation videos “On the Farm” (2005) and “Campfire Song” (2007) and live-action video “Feed the Starter” (2005). These films have screened on the Boiing television network and at the Mill Valley Film Festival, San Francisco Bay Area International Film Festival, and Istanbul International Children’s Film Festival among other venues. Her many awards and honors include residencies at the Djerassi Resident Artist Program, Woodside, California; McColl Center for Visual Art, Charlotte, North Carolina; and Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Omaha, Nebraska. Most recently, Sarah is the curator of a film screening of stop-motion works by artists and filmmakers called “Stop & Go.”
Ekaterina Mikhaylova was born in Moscow. Graduated in 1989, on Federal State Cinematography Institute (VGIK, class of professor Kourchevsky). Right after graduating, she started working as a designer and director in Soyusmultifilm, section for puppets film. Her direction debut was film “The Night Before Christmas”. Since 1997, she cooperates with studio “Man and Time” and since 2000 she creates in film studio ANIMOS.
For her film “The Night Before Christmas” she was awarded with Golden medal on International festival of children and youth films, and, in 1997 in Festival LITERATURE AND FILM in Gatchin, she was awarded as the most successful debutant. In the same year she had been awarded for the best animation in puppets film, and she won The first prize in professional rating. On shift of millennium, during 2000, Ekaterina Mikhaylova realizes film “Three Sisters In The Mountain”, winch was awarded as the best film for youth on Russian open festival of animation, which takes place in city of Tarus. Each new film by this young artist is marked with awards. Her film, “Captains Daughter”, based on motives of same named Puskin’s work, was rewarded in Belgrade, on Third European Festival BALKANIMA..
